Over the past week I have been working on the beginnings of my writings for my Masters. Some of you might already know this (but then again some of you may not)... that this blog forms part of the practical component of my Master Study_ and in many ways functions as both a journal and an electronic newspaper. I have recently been going back to some of my writings dated as far back as 2009_ and was equally surprised and pleased to find that part of my original thinking, although not well articulated or theoretically supported (due to my lack of research, honing in or finding some relevance in the topic) nonetheless, expressed fundamental aspects as to  why I started this blog and its purpose... I wanted to find a place on the internet to inspire, reveal, inform, express and create dialogue... a means to communicate... between myself, the students and the world (this all sounded incredibly zealous).

so this is where osmosis comes in...

on the same axis

This morning, I was reading "A Dialogue with Photography"_ (Paul Hill and Thomas Cooper) and once again came across my all time favorite quote by Henri Cartier Bresson (HCB). Every time I read these lines,  I feel,  I discover Photography more...and one of my images jumped to mind...so  I also decided to share this with you.

HCB says:
"For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant, which - in visual terms - questions and decides simultaneously.

In "order to give meaning" to the world, one has to feel ones self involved in what one frames through the viewfinder.

This attitude requires concentration, a discipline of the mind, sensitivity and a sense of geometry. It is by great economy of means that one arrives at simplicity of expression. One must always take photos with the greatest respect for the subject and oneself.

To take a Photograph means to recognize - simultaneously and within a fraction of a second - both the fact its self and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it its meaning. 

It is putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis. (2005:66)

Why do flying ants loose their wings?

   Dedication to flying ants   

I shot this image the 2 mornings ago... It found me... I walked down my steps my eyes were unconsciously drawn to its tiny shape and I became mesmerized by it's smallness and simple geometry. 

As I explored the tiny wings, I felt saddened. I began to think of how the wings symbolized flight and were now neatly abandoned. The raindrops, which were large by comparison, look like heavy tears and indicated to me that perhaps the tears had saturated the fragile wings so much that they had to be left behind...

I saw my interpretation [which evolved from how I was feeling] as a thought provoking metaphor for the struggles we as human beings deal with when our hearts are saddened and we find we have to re-invent ourselves and start again...
